Catching Airplanes

(Image from http://karigoneglobal.wordpress.com/)

I lived in Rio for 2 years and only once made it outside the city borders, so when I started working in Delhi I promised myself things would be different.  To keep that promise, I've made it a practice to use long weekends as an excuse to get away from Delhi and see more of this part of the world.  I've been to Agra (to see the Taj Mahal), Dubai, Muscat and Kathmandu (3 times.)

I looked at the calendar on arrival and realized there was a 3 day weekend for Easter, so I started trying to figure out where to go.  I knew I wanted someplace new, didn't want to spend the entire trip flying or driving, and that thanks to recently paying my taxes, I didn't have a ton of money to spend.  I started mentally making a list of places on this side of the world I wanted to see, solicited ideas from friends and coworkers and soon found myself with a crazy list that included:  Amman Jordan, Istanbul, Thailand, Leh India, Cairo, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Kerala India.

My inner-geek came out when I created a spreadsheet to compare the costs of flights to each location, the number of hours it would take to get there and the cost of hotels.  Sadly, with just 3 days off the flight time proved to be the biggest killer (not enough direct flights.)  I finally stumbled across a red-eye flight from Delhi to Bangkok which would mean I could switch planes and fly into the mountains of Chiang Mai and get still be there by noon on Friday.  Trip booked.  If I have to spend Easter away from my family, doing it in Thailand seems reasonable.
