Playing Catch Up

Kat Sloma has a great series of lessons and challenges called Exploring with a Camera, I always learn something interesting and I like the way they are paced, with a bit more time to work on the challenge.  I was convinced her Rimmed with Light challenge was beyond my skills - I just couldn't get the technique to make sense in my head - until I visited a local garden one evening.  Quite by accident I started to notice how the setting sun was affecting some of my photos and things clicked.  I got a couple of shots I loved - and even though she's moved on to the next challenge, I was so excited to finally "get it" I just had to share.

Am I the only one who learns this way - you read something over and over and it just doesn't seem to make sense, you walk away from it for a while and then, suddenly it is staring you in the face?

I can't seem to get enough of Peter Bradley Adams - his music is so amazing.  As I drove home from the garden, this song came on and it had me dreaming of a love just like the one described in the lyrics.

Peter Bradley Adams - For You

Then his I Cannot Settle Down came on and I remembered that my restless need to travel and explore doesn't make that dream of finding very easy.  I love it when listening to a couple of good songs results in hours of reflection.

You are definitely not alone. I read Brian Peterson's Understanding Exposure twice before it began to sink in, and I'm quite sure a third reading would also be helpful! I'm another fan of Kat's Exploring series. Your photos are gorgeous!!

Jamie, these rimmed with light photographs are absolutely gorgeous! I was just reading Karen's comment on Bryan Peterson's book, and I had the exact same experience with that same book! It was just fantastic, but the first time through I just could not get it. Then...perfectly clear!
Congratulations on these wonderful photographs, and have a wonderful weekend.

Those are beautiful shots, the light on the blossom is so delicate and so well captured.

I've not come across the website you link to before, but am now enjoying exploring it.

You did good! I have this problem of thinking I should be able to master everything in 2 seconds...hopefully someday I'll realize that isn't the case.

Off to check out Kat's site...

Beautiful shots! The lighting is definitely delicious. I'm a total hands-on learner. I usually walk all the way around my subject (if possible) and snap a few from every angle when I'm trying to figure it all out. Awesome!

I love these pink blossom catches. I too had a hard time with that concept, and found it "on accident" (as 3rd graders like to say) rather than on purpose.
Glad to see you're coming 'round to spring.

There you are you see. You totally can do it - it's just a case of going out and looking round you and then it all falls into place. Kat's series has certainly made me think more about what I'm seeing and different ways in which it can be lit.

I'm in love with your pink. I had problems with this "rimmed light" and eventually decided that it was way beyond my skills. I love that you persevered. it was so worth the effort. have a great weekend Jamie.

I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes it'll keep bugging me to no end, until... sometimes randomly it clicks, like right as I am laying down to sleep. I think our brains just need some time to process things until it's good and internalized.

Wonderlust and love make for an interesting combination. You need to find love that will go along on adventures. Maybe even find love during one of your adventures. :)

This is beautiful - I think I could learn a LOT from you because I have no clue about what I´m actually doing with my camera half of the time! :-D

you aren't the only one to learn like that.
I really like how the images show how awesome you've caught the lesson.

I agree, often new info takes some time to fully grasp. Your photos are lovely! You've definitely learned this lesson:)

I learn dance that way. I try and I try and I can't remember a routine, then on the next day it's suddenly there and easy. Your shots are amazing.

Interesting breakdown of your learning process. I've never thought about my own, but maybe I should. It would probably make my life less frustrating!
Your photos are amazing, btw.

Maureen said...

Oh, that's funny. When I first saw your first shot, I immediately thought of Kat's challenge. I think you did a perfect job of it. And it doesn't matter how you learn, what's important is that you keep learning and trying. It's all good.

kelly@thebluemuse said...

I experience that kind of learning all the time, especially as I get older! And those are some amazing photos...

krissilugbill said...

i totally learn that way. I am gonna have to check these lessons out. that top photo is amazing

Cindy said...

yes, i learn that way, too. it just has to become part of my psyche. i love your photos. the pinks and blues and i think you definitely captured the light around the edges and made me aware of looking for it, too.
