Breakfast and Dinner

I haven't been here a week yet and I've already found new favorites.  I seem to have some combination of this meal for breakfast and dinner.
  • Pears - I'm trying different varieties and haven't found one I don't like.
  • Cheese - I bought a wedge of Gruyere my first day here and am still working on it - so good.  I'm trying a soft cheese next, any suggestions?
  • Yogurt - Can someone please explain why at home I feel the need to add honey to plain yogurt, but here I like plain just as it is.  I'm honestly curious about the different flavors, so if someone knows the answer please share.

I've bought the dessert to go along my meal, chocolate, but haven't opened it yet (I'm afraid I'll eat the entire thing if I do.

There is a great grocery store near where I switch buses, I've spent a bit of time there already and keep finding excuses to go back.  One of my favorite things to do when I travel is explore grocery stores.  I think you can learn a lot about the area and the culture by checking them out.  One surprise this time - prepackaged meals have arrived in Switzerland, I don't remember seeing those on my last visit.  I bought a lentil salad to try when I get tired of pears and cheese.

Am I the only person that finds grocery stores fun to visit?

I heard this song on the train Saturday, one line seemed to stick in my head:  "And if your too busy talking, you're not busy listening, to hear what the land has to say.  Quiet your mind."

Yum, looks like a great, simple, no fuss meal.
Shopping for "everyday" items in a foreign country is fun. I like seeing different packaging for the same items we have in the states and toiletries. A tube of toothpaste packaged in a foreign language, for instance, is way more interesting than what I brought from home.

Switzerland was the only place I ever found yogurt I liked. I keep trying to develop a taste for it here, but can't manage it. I ate quite a bit of it there, although it was many, many years ago.

I love grocery stores, but more than that, the specialty food stores. Those places where you fine the unusual. I wish I could answer your question on the yogurt, but I can tell you that I absolutely cannot eat plain yogurt here in the States. Not even with honey. It has an odd taste to me. About as plain as I can go is vanilla, and I love that on fruit!

Love this song!!

I just thought of something. We do have yogurt here specifically labeled Swiss yogurt. I have never tried it, thinking it was just an added name to make it more interesting. You can bet I am going to try plain Swiss yogurt the first chance I get!!!

Looks so good! I'm a huge fan of pears as well. Have you tried asian pears? My husband introduced me to them and they're to die for, yum. And that's a mystery about the yogurt, but it's probably related to the ingredients, cultures, and even the taste of milk in different countries. It's true, produce tastes different everywhere you go, because the land where it grows (or is milked) has different nutrients. That's my guess.

Now I want a pear, darn it.

I enjoy "exotic" grocery stores as well...except when I can't read the language..but that's really my own fault!

I've heard chocolate is calorie free in Europe. :P

I love crocery stores - I feel so inspired walking through, seeing all the good stuff displayed in great ways. And hungry. I tend to feel very, very hungry when I´m done.

Some stores I shop food at here in my city gives free bananas to kids - that is a great idea since they usually also get hungry. That way they - and I - don´t have to feel cranky and can continue to buy food in peace..!

Ooh - yummy! Pears, cheese and yogurt, what could be better! I don't have much luck with pears here (UK) - I always seem to get ones that are too hard or have too little flavour. Maybe I should explore them a bit more and pick one of each type they have at the grocery store and compare them. With Gruyere cheese too :-)

I also find that yogurt is different in every country. No idea why. I found it really runny in the US, but it's nice and thick here and the natural isn't sour either. It's a little more like Greek-style Yogurt (yum!)

absolutely love your new types of food, pears and cheese go together so well. I am with you on the yoghurt although not with greek yoghurt. Love your shots, they all look very yummy

You know the grocery store is one of my very favorite places to go, but for much different reasons that you are talking about! :) That dinner looks yummy! I'm going to have to buy pears today!

Lindt is one of my favourite chocolate brands. I'd eat the whole thing, too!

Looks like breakfast, lunch, or dinner! Glad you're enjoying your time there. Interesting how food can define a culture and vary so greatly.

I have to say, I'm intrigued by grocery stores in different areas. I've never been a fan of pears but gracious, I could tear up some cheese and chocolate! YUM!

you've made me hungry for pears. I cannot advise you on yogurt, the only flavor I've ever eaten is plain with no sweeteners, preferably Fage because it's so creamy. But I'm betting that you're getting better stuff there. I love grocery stores with wooden floors that squeak, but they are getting more difficult to come by. there's one not far from where I live and when I'm on a water run I try to stop there. it's a delightful experience. I so wish I were there with you. :)

I'm so envious. Thank you for sharing lots of little details it's almost like being there. Well, maybe not, but I can pretend. Congrats on the new house, fingers crossed, how exciting!

I can't blame you for wanting to eat all the cheese and pears and yogurt. Sometimes I do fruit and yogurt instead of honey and yogurt myself - maybe the pears make up for the honey?
My favorite soft cheese is a local one (for me) called Mt Tam. Its by a company called Cowgirl Creamery. Don't know if its hard to find elsewhere though...

I also love going to foreign grocery stores...or ones in other towns I just have not been too...it can sum up an entire culture of a neighborhood sometimes...I am also a sucker for unique packaging so like to look at all the eye candy. Sounds like you are having a great (and yummy) time!

I see no mention of that wine we talked about.
I'm a plain yogurt eater anyway-stir in my own strawberries. Are you saying the plain is even better there? Another reason to travel.
I have vacationed in the Virgin Islands and West Indies and my fam always goes to local grocery and markets with fresh produce.
