Fly Away

I arrived in Istanbul in early October, fully expecting to jump straight into my project and weekends spent working. By Thursday at the end of my first few days there, I realized I was going to have the weekend off, so I decided to get out of town with my camera for a weekend of fun. I did a google search for all the direct flights from Istanbul to cities I'd never been to before and decided a weekend in Vienna sounded marvelous.

Absolutely no planning went into the this trip, so I simply showed up, checked Lonely Planet for a list of things to see and set off with my camera. I only had Saturday and part of Sunday to explore, but I managed to pack a lot of things in, and still leave a few sights for a future trip.

The weather was gorgeous so for the most part I skipped going inside to museums and such to enjoy being outside with the amazing architecture and parks of the city. I'm really more of a planner, but I love holiday's like this, unplanned, with no agenda and simply time to wander where my whim takes me. It was the perfect way to prepare myself for what has been a punishing trip to Istanbul (the city is treating me well, but the work is intense and all consuming!)

So tell me, have you ever bought a totally last minute flight to a city you've never been to  on a whim? Would you want to? Where would you go?

A Perfect Pair

I spent a glorious long weekend at home with my family, it was just what I needed to get me through the next couple of busy months, until I get to move home again.  I'm not exaggerating when I say I spent the most time with my niece Miss M.  She's decided she quite likes me, and I love her like crazy, so we became a pair, it was rare for one of us to be without the other.

We managed to fit in two birthday parties, a visit to the zoo and the aquarium and yet still found time to play the games I loaded to my iPhone just for her.  As we'd sit together I found myself singing the new Sugarland song, "Stuck Like Glue" not only is it a great song, it was the perfect fit for me and Miss M this weekend (and hopefully for many days into the future.)

Missing

How to explain my recent lack of posts?  I could blame it all on work and and I wouldn't be lying. But the real truth is that I've been feeling a bit blue and haven't been able to come up with anything light-heart and fun to blog about; worse, those songs that usually fill my head have been missing.

I've been home for 2 days and work has been as busy as it was in Rio - but working from home means I can turn the music up as loud as I want and sing as I type - in the hope that the music will start playing in my head again.

Today I ran across a song that reminded me that I get to chose whether to stay blue or to fight my way back to a happier place - this is me choosing to fight.

I've been beaten up and bruised
I've been kicked right off my shoes
Been down on my knees more times than you'd believe
When the darkness tries to get me
There's a light that just won't let me
It might take my pride, and tears may fill my eyes
But I'll stand back up

I've weathered all these storms
But I just turn them into wind so I can fly
What don't kill you makes you stronger
When I take my last breath
That's when I'll just give up

So go ahead take your best shot
Let 'er rip, give it all you've got
You might win this round but you can't keep me down
'Cause I'll sand back up
And you'll know just the moment when I've had enough
Sometimes I'm afraid and I don't feel that tough
But I'll stand back up.
