I grew up in a rural area where deer hunting season was a very big deal - we even got a day off school for the opening of the hunt.
This year during the hunt I did manage to get my deer - although my version of "get" involves getting a few photos of one.
Given that the women in my family used the dear hunt holiday as a retail holiday where the only thing that got a work out was our credit card, I've decided this kind of hunting (with a camera) might just work for me. After all, this way I get pretty pictures and no big credit card bill when I'm finished.
Did anyone else get a school holiday for something as odd as the Deer Hunt? Or is it just rural Utah? Note, they called it Fall Break, so it wasn't quite as blatant as I make it sound.
I hope this little doe never finds herself in the headlights.

my closest friend is very much into hunting. he lives in oregon and does his best to convince me that it is loads of fun. but hanging around in the woods, being still for hours is really not my idea of fun. i would much prefer hunting them down with a camera.
A day off for deer hunting? Oh my! My brother is a big hunter. I'll have to tell him about this.
LOL! Funny post. Nice pics too. Glad she's not a buck then I would have to be sad for her.
we don't get the day off for deer hunting, but i think it's expected that kids will be out of school around that time. great photos!
Wonderful creatures - we see a lot near where we live and I'm always worried about the roads. How about those trees in the first shot!
Hunting with your camera... LOVE IT. These are beautiful, Jamie!
I like seeing them alive. :-)
In some families, it was a BIG deal when the moose hunt started every year, but not that many swedes are hunters that it affected us so much.
These are great shots of this deer! I love how they called the beginning of hunting season "Fall Break". It's like they were trying to be sneaky!
Fall break sounds familiar but I can't quite remember when it took place...it may have been deer unting season! Although I'm with you, just hunting with a camera, and no shooting Bambi's mom :(
my preference is shooting deer with a camera versus a bullet. but hunting is here to stay, so I avoid the woods during hunting season. Wisconsin doesn't have a school holiday for hunting, but it does have a robust hunting season/crowd. I especially like the photo of the leaping deer. fantastic light too. happy weekend to you Jamie.
Wow, your photographs are so beautiful.
That's the kind of "deer getting" I would get too. I've never once been hunting, but I love a good excuse to go shopping. I guess that's what happens when you grow up in the city. Awesome pictures!
great photos! love the jumping one.
when i was growing up (upstate new york) it was an unofficial holiday, all the boys skipped school and no one questioned it. my sister in law lives in pennsylvania and they still have that day off school.
i like your kind of hunting much better :)
there were so many dear in iowa near my old house, they would run through our yard sometime. and we lived in a well populated area so it was kind of freaky!
BEAUTIFUL!! I wish we had deer around here. So filled with gentle grace!
Beautiful photos x
very well captured, great shots and wonderful colours in the background too
My husband and dad hunt...I prefer to hike. :)
Love that second photo! We never got a day off for deer hunting, but when I was growing up in rural Ohio, we had a whole week off for the county fair. Everyone was at the fair, showing their animals for 4-H. There's no vacation now, but it was a lot of fun when I was growing up.
Your photos are fabulous...really pretty. Living where I do; nope, no holiday for deer hunting.
Here in the Endless Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania we always have the first day of doe season off, fondly known as "Doe Day"!
My public elementary/high school always got off for Jewish holidays. It's not really 'odd', but I find it very strange when people attended schools that did not get off from school for those holidays.
Your photos are lovely, as always.
Wow Jamie, you DID get your deer. I hope you were safe while doing so. I taught in PA for 15 years. I know there are still some areas there where there is a day off from school for deer season. I'll take a pass. Deer season means Tula and I can only get into the woods on Sundays.
Sooo beautiful! That first one is a stunner!!
No, no breaks when I was in school but here in TN they aren't afraid to call it a day if someone said there was a chance of snow or if the wind was going to be a bit too strong...I'm not kidding...it's odd.
