What Would You Take?

We had a bit of excitement at the office recently.   The building was suddenly filled with the overpower scent of methane gas.  We told the smokers to hide their lighters, threw open all the doors, evacuated and called the fire department.  All is well, but our unexpected evacuation gave me a chance to think about what was important enough to grab in an emergency.

It's a good thing it wasn't too big of an emergency because I grabbed pretty much everything.  Computer and power cord, both cell phones, purse, ipod and speakers, notebook, lunch bag, and even my water bottle.  I hope than a real emergency I'd focus on a fewer items but I don't really see myself walking out with out my purse, phone, keys, computer and ipod.

I know this isn't what we are taught to do in case of an emergency, but I seem to be the kind of girl who doesn't pack light.  Could you walk out with nothing, traveling light like the butterfly above, or would you grab a few things as you exited?

I guess you never know what you'd take until it happens. I imagine I'd grab the computer, any photo stuff out and about on my desk, and my cell. The rest of the office stuff....all replaceable.
Another gorgeous photo....love it.

Gorgeous photo!

I'm glad everything was okay...I, too, wouldn't know what to take from my house in the case of an emergency. I should probably pack some sort of emergency bag, but I'd most likely just grab my computer, camera, and purse. Seriously! ;)

We deal with this each Hurricane season. The pets, family, really important papers, are easy to move out of harms way but I get really concerned about my antiques, my harps, etc. Not so easy to pick up. One year, the water was running from the ceiling and I was trying to catch the water with a recycling bin before it soaked my antique armoire. LOL!

I would grab my children, of course, and after them, probably my laptop, which might sound shallow, but it has most of our family photos and my writing. Big box of journals too. I'd have to have that. And our cats. I wonder what my kids would pick as their precious irreplaceables.

I have already discussed with Jeremy that if ever there was a fire I would grab the kids and he would grab the computer. I am sure if it really did happen I would go crazy and start throwing ridiculous things out windows (after my kids were safe of course) I am just going to hope it doesn't ever happen!! I love that butterfly. AMAZING picture.

Actually, your post makes me remember one time where my mum years and years ago thought she was having a heart attack - she wasn't it was indigestion and both my sister and I knew this as she was directing us on what to do whilst the paramedics were trying to check her out! As they took her away for observation (with us being ordered to lock up, make sure everything was switched off, etc), she also said "and take my bag and purse and bring it with you", as of course we were going with her to make sure she was ok. She was fine, and I am smiling at the thought of her and that day, she was some woman.

glad you guys got out okay! that is always interesting to think about what you would "really" do if there was an emergency. I would love to say I would walk out all calm and cool, but I know I would probably just run out screaming and flailing leaving everything behind (except Lila and the hubs)

I really don't know what I would do. I mean at home I would try to get a few things out, cause they are just too precious. The dogs and the camera. That's all I need. Everything else is replacable. At work I wouldn't have the opportunity to get my stuff before I get the children and myself out.

i hope scott would be there to get me out ... i kind of freeze. i'm glad everything was ok because the thought of you with all of those things, especially the computer is a funny one. taking your ipod is a no brainer, though. enjoy your weekend!

It has never been tested, thankfully, but I would guess I'd be a grabber too. "Just one more thing..." It reminds me of the scene in "The Jerk", He keeps grabbing one more thing and adding it to his list of things to take. Everytime, the thermos is the final thing on the list. I'm pretty sure I would need my thermos too.
Great guest post, by the way, I really enjoyed it.

What a beautiful image! I've actually given this a bit of thought. If I took what really mattered to me, I wouldn't get out of my house in time as I have several baskets of scrapbooks. What I'd really need is my external hard drive where all the photos are backed up. I wonder how fast I could disconnect it? My purse and phone would also be on the list, and I guess I could do with those three. I'm guessing I'd be running out without anything if there was a fire, 'cause truth is, the only thing that really matters are the people.

The only thing I would be heartbroken about losing (other than loved ones) would be photos and journals. Everything else hopefully could be replaced. I think about this a lot actually and I better start making some back up discs! :-)
